When talking about a period of time use the following construction:
с +  до

Я занят с девяти утра до трех дня.  
I am busy from 9am till 3pm.

В России люди празднуют Новый год с конца декабря до начала января. 
In Russia people celebrate New Year from the end of Dec till the beginning of Jan.

Some time ago

If you want to say that something happened in the past and define how long ago you can say:
period of time тому назад / назад. For example:

Я был в Америке шесть лет назад (тому назад).
I was in America 6 years ago.

Using назад is preferable.
